The author has always considered it "temoignage," or testimony, while his publisher uses the more widely designation of "memoir." In 2006, when the new Marion Wiesel translation of NIGHT was published, there were articles online that are still available which discuss the occasional confusion and mis-categorization of the book. See, for instance, the Associated Press article "Amazon recategorizes Elie Wiesel's 'Night' as 'memoir'." This is an AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING unit. I've been searching online for different ideas and nothing compares to this! It's extremely engaging and gives the students plenty of opportunities to really experience the content. This should be a lesson they'll remember forever! Your students will benefit from this and thank you already for posting this!
